12 Most Loved Christmas Songs of All Time (Part 1 of 2)

IT’S A FEW DAYS before Christmas, folks! Although it has been a tough year, holidays has always been special to each and every one of us. It’s our lone chance to be with our family and celebrate a year full of experience.

Today, I have compiled for you the top twelve most loved Christmas songs of all time. All of the songs in my list is in English. This way, we could all celebrate with glee and spread the spirit of Christmas.

Mariah Carey

All I Want for Christmas is You by Mariah Carey

The Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without hearing this song from the diva herself – Mariah Carey. This iconic legend of a song was actually co-written and co-produced by Mariah herself, and was included in her first holiday album “Merry Christmas” in 1994.

Continuously breaking and setting records all over the world, this song actually holds the record for the longest trip to number one in the Billboard Hot 100. Due to its popularity, it earned Mariah a reported $60million in royalties alone, in 2017. Not too shabby for a single that sold over 16 million copies and is considered to be one of the best-selling singles of all time, right?

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus by Jackson 5

Although popularized by the legendary siblings, Jackson 5, the song “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” was actually first recorded by Jimmy Boyd in 1952. Composed and written by British songwriter Tommie Connor, this song was rerecorded by the Jackson 5 for their 1970 Christmas Album which is called Jackson 5 Christmas Album.

With numerous international renditions of the song, the English version by Jackson 5 had peaked on the Billboard Holiday 100 at the number forty five position. It recently peaked at the Swiss singles chart in number 100 last December 2019.

Jingle Bell Rock by Bobby Helms

The song “Jingle Bell Rock” has been covered multiple times by different artists. There was Hall & Oates in 1983, George Strait in 2000, Aaron Tippin in 2002, Rascal Flatts in 2008, Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert in 2012 and recently Kelly Clarkson.

Despite the numerous covers, the original always points us back to Bobby Helms who released it in 1957. It was composed by Joseph Carleton Beal and James Ross Boothe. Since its first released in America, this song has been a popular go to and a consistent holiday song in radios every Christmas.

Last Christmas by Wham!

Who would have thought that the beginning of such an iconic song was in a bedroom? “Last Christmas” was written in George Michael’s bedroom while he was visiting his parents. It was interpreted by the British pop duo Wham! And was released in 1984.

The song reached phenomenal records in various music charts all over the world, including number 1 in Denmark, Slovenia and Sweden. The song also once held the record of the most played Christmas song of the 21st century in the United Kingdom. The duo Wham! Donated all their royalties to the relief efforts being made for the Ethiopian famine.

Do They Know It’s Christmas by Band Aid 1984

Just as the same time Last Christmas by Wham! fills the air with positive holiday cheer, the song  “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” was written as a response to the ghastly television news regarding the Ethiopian famine between 1983 to 1985.

This song was written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure in a single day – November 25, 1984, and was released only a few days after – December 3, 1984. The single once held the fastest selling single in the UK chart history, and is considered one of the nation’s favorite Christmas song.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town (Michael Buble version)

Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town” was written by J. Fred Coots and Haven Gillespie. Although the first version of the song was attributed to the musician Harry Reser in 1934, Michael Buble’s version which was released in 2011 is among the most popular rendition and is considered the most streamed cover of the song- raking up more than 104 million streams in Spotify alone in 2019. So far, the song has been covered by numerous artists and bands such as Bing Crosby, Mariah Carey, Neil Diamond, Frank Sinatra and The Jackson 5.
