BEHIND the camera and all the glitz and glamour of the industry she works in, she is Phylbert Angelli Ranollo Fagestrom. But when the lights are up and the cameras start rolling, she is Bea Alonzo, one of the country’s multi-awarded, veteran actresses whose career expanse is decades.
You may have seen her growing up in television and movies, having started her career in 2001 when she was only a teenager. Almost two decades in show businesses and non-stop movies, projects, and endorsement, she had become among the most trusted endorser and go to actresses in the industry today.
She is turning 33 this October 17, yet when you look at the work she’s done and the projects she is simultaneously doing, you would have thought that she lived a colorful, meaningful long life. In lieu of her upcoming birthday and career milestone, let us look back at the public life of Bea Alonzo.
She was born to a British father and a Filipina mother. Although her parents separated when she was still young, she is the eldest of four siblings. Being half-Filipina and half-British, her beauty, not to mention her stunning height, already stood out when she was still a child. She began joining beauty pageants, from which she was discovered.
She underwent several auditions and finally was encouraged to train in various workshops. After the trainings, it surely paid off as she was finally launched as a member of Star Circle Batch 10. She started her career as a cast in the teen series K2BU in 2002 alongside Shaina Magdayao, Angelene Aguilar and Pia Romero (then the screen name of Pia Wurtzbach).
Transition to Teleserye Leading Lady
Her breakthrough role is in the series Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay, when she played Katrina Argos, the love interest of Yuri Orbida / Andre Guinto (played by John Lloyd Cruz). Her role as Katrina and her chemistry with John Lloyd paved the way for the iconic John Lloyd-Bea love team. The two then had their follow up series ‘It Might Be You’, ‘I Love Betty La Fea’ and the iconic ‘Maging Sino Ka Man’.
From there, she appeared in numerous teleserye such as Ikaw ang Lahat sa Akin, Magkaribal (as Angela Abella/Gelai Agustin), Guns and Roses (as Regina Santana), A Beautiful Affair (as Genevieve Saavedra), Sana Bukas Pa Ang Kahapon (as Rose Buenavista-Salvador & Atty. Emmanuelle Gaspar-Romero) and A Love To Last (as Andrea Agoncillo- Noble) working with veteran actors and actresses.
The New Generation’s Movie Queen
While shooting television series, she also worked non-stop in filming numerous movies for the big screen. Of course, her demand as an actress was also fuelled by the very effective chemistry she has with her on-screen love team, John Lloyd Cruz. They starred in films like My First Romance, Now That I Have You, Miss You Like Crazy, Close To You, The Mistress, One More Chance and A Second Chance. We want more!
Her acting ability, and her ability to send butterflies to the stomach was not limited by her acting partner. In fact, she was paired with various actors in her different movies. For one, the movie Dreamboy with Piolo Pascual, Pacquiao: The Movie with Jericho Rosales, And I Love You So with Sam Milby and Derek Ramsey, First Love with Aga Muhlach and Unbreakable with Richard Gutierrez. These array of actors she had worked with only shows that she can work with anybody at the same time making box office hits, making her the Movie Queen of The Philippines.
Such beauty and character would eventually attract numerous suitors. Bea had a considerable amount of former flames that eventually made her the strong independent woman that she is today. Among her former partners are Mico Palanca, Jake Cuenca, Zanjoe Marudo (they dated for more than five years), Gerald Anderson ( perhaps the most controversial) and most recently Dominique Roque ( they haven’t confirmed nor denied anything yet!)
Bea was supposed to star in the series “Kahit Minsan Lang” alongside Richard Gutierrez, Rafael Rosell, Jameson Blake and Christian Bables. But according to Star Creatives, ABS-CBN entertainment production unit, due to the restrictive shooting, the series could no longer be accommodated.
Although it is a sad news particularly for all her fans waiting for her comeback in teleseryes, she is focusing her energy and time in vlogging. Her YouTube channel Bea Alonzo, has now over half a million subscribers.
Whew! There are more interesting facts about Bea and we can make a series about her! We want to greet the Movie Queen a Happy, Happy Birthday!
