ANGELICA PANGANIBAN has been a staple in the entertainment world for the longest time. We saw her grow up from a cute and doll-like child actress to the powerful, strong and independent woman she is now.
Her career is heavily invested on acting in films, and television series. When you look at her life’s work, you’d be surely impressed by the amount of work and projects, most of them high-grossing, she’d starred in.
Now that she turns another year older (and wiser), let us look at Angelica’s ups and downs and how she managed to surpassed them all.
Angelica Panganiban is actually Angelica Charlson in real life. Born in November 4, 1986 in Payatas, Quezon City to a Filipina mother and an American father. She got the surname Panganiban from her adoptive family.
She went to St. Vincent School in Teacher’s Village in Quezon City. Her high school days were spent in St. Vincent School’s main campus in West Avenue. Although she was busy with her professional career, she managed to finish her college degree from Thames International Business School where she took Mass Communication.
Entry to Showbiz
She started her career in the show business as a bankable child actress. From her movies and other performances, she received numerous awards such as the Best Child Actress in FAMAS and PMPC Star Awards. Her acting in the iconic Filipino movie Sarah Ang Munting Prinsesa (which stars her real life friend Camille Prats as Sarah) won her numerous Best Child Actress nominations.
In her teenage years, she starred in the popular youth oriented television series G-mik in 1999 where she was paired with her real (ex) and reel partner Carlo Aquino. This love team continued in other show Berks in 2002.
Angelica In The Movies
Although it has been years where she played supporting roles, her huge break was with the movie Santa Santita in 2004. Opposite Jericho Rosales, and directed by Laurice Guillen, she played the role of Malen, the daughter of an intercessor at the famous Quiapo Church in Manila. Her acting in this role led her to numerous Best Actress nominations such as FAMAS, FAL Luna and ENPRESS Golden Screen Awards.
She showed her acting versatility when she starred in the comedy film Here Comes The Bride in 2010, playing the role of Stefanie. For this project, she ENPRESS Golden Screen Award for Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) and the GMMSF Box-Office Entertainment Award for Comedy Actress of the Year.
She continued her film projects, most of which earned her nominations and wards such as in Segunda Mano (2011) as Best Supporting Actress in FAMAS, One More Try (2012) as GMMSF Box-Office Entertainment Award for Film Actress of the Year, That Thing Called Tadhana (2014) as Gawad TANGLAW Best Actress and The Unmarried Wife (2016) as FAMAS Award for Best Actress.
Angelica The Soap Opera Queen
After her impressive debut as a lead movie actress in Santa Santita, Angelica started her transition as a leading lady and main kontrabida. She starred opposite Piolo Pascual in ‘Mangarap Ka’, but her role as villain to Claudine Barretto in ‘Iisa Pa Lamang‘ as Scarlet is her breathrough role. Through the project, she was able to prove to everyone that she’s not longer a child actress and that she’s a woman ready to take on more challenging roles.
Her portrayal as the bida-kontrabida Rubi is her biggest teleserye project and she received accolades because of it. We can safely say that she is the first ‘bida-kontrabida’ lead whom people loved and hated at the same time.
There are numerous television series that she worked on. However, one of the most iconic is on the series Apoy Sa Dagat, opposite Piolo Pascual and Deither Ocampo. She played the two roles of Serena Mirasol and Rebecca Del Sol. Although it was her first time playing a dual role in television, it was also the first series where the lead star got billed twice.
She continued to play iconic roles in television such as Madam Claudia Salameda-Buenavista and Greta Barcial in the remake of iconic Filipino drama series Pangako Sa’yo in 2016, Patty Calumpang in Playhouse ( 2018) and Gabbi in Call Me Tita (2019).
In case you missed it, Angelica starred in the digital film ‘Love Lockdown‘ which was shot during the first few months of the Enhanced Community Lockdown in Metro Manila. You can watch the film via IWantTFC.
She is currently playing the role of Celine Delgado in the series Walang Hanggang Paalam ,a series aired in the Kapamilya Channel. The series also casts Paulo Avelino, Zanjoe Marudo and Arci Munoz.
There you have it friends, it was such as roller coaster ride looking back at Angelica’s achievement. But among the actresses in the industry, I look up to her as she patiently worked her way up to become the most bankable actress she is now. Confirmed not only through numerous awards and projects, if you have been with her during the start of her career, you can surely say that she had arrived.
