WITH THE EXPANSIVE choices of movies and series to watch these days, it is a little bit confusing on how and where to actually watch them. There are a lot of streaming services available for consumption – those with various subscription choices, different contents, and target audiences.
Most popular of these streaming sites is Netflix, which started in 2007. Right now, the subscription cost for Netflix varies based on the number of streams per account. The monthly basic fee for 1 stream (device) is at 9USD. But this does not allow HD viewing. Standard Netflix account costs 13USD per month but allows 2 streams and HD viewing. Their Premium offers 4 streams, also at HD, at 16USD per month.
The content is as reasonable as its pricing scheme. Most of my personal friends are subscribed to this streaming site as they have popular American and international shows. Among the most viewed series here are The Witcher, Peaky Blinders, Stranger Things, You, and Sex Education.
If you happen to get bored with their content, you can also opt to try and subscribe to other Netflix alternatives. Below are the list I compiled that gives you a brief preview of the contents and cost.
1. Amazon Prime Video
If you have an Amazon Prime subscription, then it is your lucky day. Amazon Prime Video comes with it for free. The Amazon Prime costs 119USD per year, which divides to about 13USD per month. You get a half discount if you are a student, it makes it 60USD per year or 6.50USD per month.
As for the contents, I can vouch that it is one of the best alternatives for Netflix. They have a lot of binge-worthy movies and series. Like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video also has good original programming. Here you can watch popular series like Jack Ryan, The Romanoffs, The Man In The High Castle and Wonder.
Hulu is another good option to consider for your streaming subscription. Hulu stands out from other subscription sites with the fact that even currently airing shows can be seen here right after it was aired. The most popular package is at 6USD per month. It is cheap since it still shows ads. But if you want an ad-free viewing, you can get the no ads package at 12USD per month.
If you have many family members or friends to split the cost with, Hulu offers an unlimited screen upgrade for 10USD a month. This means you can watch Hulu from unlimited simultaneous screens. Not bad right? Seinfeld, Veronica Mars, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and are some of the most viewed Hulu shows.
For the film connoisseur that you are, you can opt to subscribe to MUBI instead. It’s another Netflix alternative that offers independent film and also hosts award-winning and classic movies. What makes MUBI stands out is that there is a curator (the website expert) that chooses which movie to include in the website’s range of choices. MUBI costs 6USD per month and can be viewed from laptops, desktops, tablets or smartphones.
If you are tight on budget and would rather have a free streaming service, then Popcornflix is for you. Even though it is free, it offers a relatively good range of movies and TV shows to choose from. You can also find good options here, that are not available in Netflix. All you have to do is visit their website or download their app which is available for both Apple and Android devices.
Entertainment should be hassle-free and affordable and in some cases free of charge. With this article, you are presented with more choices to choose from, based on your needs and wants. Happy watching!
NOTE: Some of these streaming sites are not yet available for Philippine residents.
