“I would like to go back to theater. Why? Because this is where I came from, this is where I find fulfillment. It’s not like that I don’t have fulfillment in doing TV and films because most of the films I do now are advocacy films. I do not much commercial films nowadays and I do more advocacy films. My film reflects certain reality of a certain sector like extra-judicial killings, killings of journalist,” esplika ni direk Joel.
“My training came from Lino Brocka as far as theater and arts is concerned. Theater is my first love. It just happened that I have to exist that’s why I went to TV and film. It’s where the money is. When Lino died in 1991, that was the time I decided to do films,” he said.
Naging bahagi rin si Direk Joel ng Bulwagang Gantimapala as an actor or as a director.
“It’s time to give back. I have reached a certain kind of stature na hindi naman katinga-tingala but I would like to contribute, to give back. If not for this people, of not for these companies, I would not be where I am now. The body of hard work came from them. I learned from them. The body of true professional, I got it from them. My being strict on time came from them that’s why on my set you can’t come late because that was my training,” sabi niya kung bakit siya nagbabalik sa theater.
