THROUGH A SERIES of music events, the League of Authors of Public Interest Songs (LAPIS) and the Bantayog ng mga Bayani Foundation is celebrating the lives of Filipinos who fought tyranny and dictatorship. Musical Journey with Heroes, is a coming together of composers and musicians –from luminaries of protest music in the Philippines to the present generation of public interest singer-songwriters.
“Never shall we forget the darkest days of martial law and the great remembering of the martyrs who raged against the dying of the light, stoking the flames of freedom,” said Chickoy Pura, LAPIS President and band member of The Jerks.
The first in this 3-part series will happen on AUGUST 20, 2016 from 7PM to 10PM at the Bantayog Auditorium and will feature Chickoy Pura joined by singer-songwriters and fellow LAPISa members Jana Garcia, Ada Tayao, Dedong Marcelino, and Karl Ramirez with band Pordalab. Second and last one will be on October and December 2016.
“These are powerful opportunities for us to learn,” said Jana Garcia. “We must learn from history, and remember the lessons well. Know what we should do and why we must say never again to Martial Law!”
“To bury the dictator responsible for the darkest hours of history at the Libingan ng mga Bayani is to relive the tragedy and spit on the faces of the victims and their families,” said Chickoy Pura. LAPIS contributes the music event to the chorus of activities by groups, communities, families of victims, and individuals protesting the burial of President Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
“The only path to moving on is to serve justice,” ends Chickoy Pura.
