Anak nina Christopher de Leon at Sandy Andolong, pasok lang sa top 15
Mariel de Leon, laglag sa Bb. Pilipinas

BLIND ITEM: For those limp-wristed men who engage in homosexual/bisexual affairs, tiyak na kaiinggitan nila ang newest showbiz pairing na ito.

Ang tsika, isang direktor at isang singer ang magkarelasyon. Kapwa sila fair-complexioned at may itsura.

THE UNNERVING tension must have gripped most, if not all 50 candidates nitong nakaraang Binibining Pilipinas Gold coronation night. While this year’s batch had the biggest number of beautiful women, it paled in comparison in terms of the candidates’ intelligence lalo na sa karaniwan nang inaabangang Q & A portion.

Sa taong ito, a new system was adopted. Goodbye to the fish bowl containing sheets of paper with the judges’ names scribbled on them, sa halip ay meron nang button na pipindutin ng kandidata at lalabas sa screen ang pangalan ng huradong magtatanong.

Generally, all 15 questions for the semi-finalists were not really as hard as they could get. Although let’s face it, the most difficult question to answer is actually the simplest.

Of the judges, next to Kuya Boy Abunda’s question (that went this way: Are there things in life that are really for free? Why and why not?), we marvelled at Gloria Diaz’s (next to her cleavage-exposing red gown). Aniya, “Can you be a good Catholic even if you believe in the RH Bill?”

Sadly, hindi ‘yon nasagot nang maayos ng kandidata. So were most of the 15 questions, na sayang lang tuloy. While glued to that portion, hindi namin maialis na magbalik-tanaw sa mga nakalipas na BP pageants where there were good mix of beauties and brains.

STILL ON BP, one of the 50 hopefuls who made it to the Magic 15 was Mariel de Leon, anak nina Christopher de Leon at Sandy Andolong. Pero nalaglag ito nu’ng inanunsiyo na ang masuwerteng apat na kinoronahan, including the lone runner-up.

We could only cheer up the De Leon family despite Mariel’s loss. Neneng-nene pa naman kasi ang dalaga, and because of her age ay hindi pa gaanong fully-developed ang kanyang pangangatawan. Halata kasing may baby fats pa ito who also has to gain more confidence kahit sa pagrampa.

If it was any consolation, nagtatatalon sa tuwa ang mga magulang ni Mariel, her supporters included, when her name was announced. But with all the 15 semi-finalists already on stage, all we just had for Mariel was hope at least for a runner-up title.

POSTSCRIPTS TO the BP: This 2013 ang 50th year ng naturang prestihiyosong pambansang timpalak-pagandahan. Habang pinanonood namin ‘yon, we were also counting if the production glitches (read: kapalpakan) would reach the same number as old as the pageant.

Tulad na lang ng voice-over script in honor of the BP founder herself, Madame Stella Marquez de Araneta. Would somebody remind whoever wrote the script that  “gold” (inihalintulad kasi ang ginto kay Mrs. Araneta) does not “sparkle”? It glitters!

Na-miscalculate din ang haba ng pagrampa ng 50 kandidata sa long gown competition kung saan nagharana ang  isang male singer who sang two canned Spanish songs without checking how terrible his hair was!
